CHATEAU VILLEMAURINE

In 7th century, the first appearance of the Villemaurine name. The Onclin family became part of the history of Villemaurine in 2005. Major renovations to the buildings and vineyard were undertaken. Château Villemaurine then rose among the jewels of the appellation. In 2021, The LEFEVERE family, owner of Château Sansonnet, Château Moulin du Cadet and Château Soutard Cadet fell under the spell of Villemaurine and bought the property from the Onclin Family.

Château Villemaurine is made up of a total of 12 hectares (30 acres) set in the heart of the Saint-Emilion limestone plateau among the most prestigious First Classified Growths of Saint-Emilion. It stands just a few metres from the historic village and encapsulates the incomparable qualities of a site stacked with history and possesses a terroir that holds magnificent potential.

Vineyard, Terroir, and winemaking:

The 12-hectare vineyard of Chateau Villemaurine is planted to 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. This shows a change in the vineyard which was previously planted to 95% Merlot. The estate plans to increase the amount of Cabernet Franc planted in their vineyards to as much as 30% over time. On average, the vines are 30 years of age.

The terroir is clay and limestone soils. The top-soils in the western part of the Saint-Emilion limestone plateau are characterised by coarser textures (sandy-silty) over a limestone base and are similar to the soils of Clos Fourtet and Château Canon. The soils located in the eastern part display a finer texture (more clayey). Due to Villemaurine’s central location on the limestone plateau, an east-west soil texture gradient can be observed in its vineyard, which encompasses the whole range of the plateau’s different types of terroir.

The wine of Chateau Villemaurine is whole berry fermented in new, dual-walled, 68 hectoliter, stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels. The wine is aged in 80% new, French oak barrels.
Villemaurine also makes a second wine, Les Angelots de Villemaurine.
