Le Ragose Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso is a classic expression of the Valpolicella wine region in Veneto, Italy. Traditionally, Palermo was a blend that included wine not used in Mercury Head or Papillon, but winemaker Dave Phinney now sources fruit specifically for this bottling. The Cabernet Sauvignon Palermo, aged for 11 months in 34% new oak and crafted from a blend of estate-grown and purchased fruit, also incorporates small proportions of Merlot and Malbec. It presents aromas of cherries, cassis, and subtle earthiness, complemented by hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. Full-bodied and well-balanced, it offers a combination of firmness and softness, resulting in an overall enjoyable drinking experience.

Deep, dark ruby-red is not quite opaque. The nose is classic for Lafite, with meaty notes to the dark fruit complimenting cedary oak. The aromas are deep & brooding. Cassis & dark fruit on the palate is overlaid by coffee notes & plentiful cedar. There is excellent freshness. There is a good concentration of deep, dark fruit supported by fine tannins. Alcohol is balanced & the finish is long. This is a nice classic example of Lafite.

The Chateau Malescot St. Exupery is a 3rd growth of Margaux that sits right next to Chateau Margaux- one of the 5-first growths of Bordeaux. This exceptional terroir goes all the way back to 1697 when it was owned by the Escousses family. In the 1800's the property was handed to Jean-Baptiste Saint-Exupery enriching the name of the Chateau with HIS name. By June, 1955 the estate had only 7 ha of vines and the Zuger family began to restore the grounds and the castle. 30ha of the property are dedicated to the vines where the varieties of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot are grown. This is one of the most well-priced wines of Bordeaux and always well regarded, garnering high scores from critics. The 2016 vintage is comprised of 55% cabernet, 37% merlot and the 8% balance is cabernet franc and petit verdot. The wine scored high with typical notes of black currant, cedar, earth, tobacco and mocha around a backbone of fine tannins, and fresh acidity with a lengthy finish and great depth of character. The clay and limestone soil, on a chalk/an asteriated limestone bedrock, allows a natural draining and an exceptionally continuous water supply. The nose is spicy and peppery with intense aromas of blackberry, dried fig, cigar box, leather, vanilla, and meat, accented by subtle violet notes. The palate is dry and full-bodied with crisp acidity and firm, ripe tannins. It presents a complex mix of paprika, black plum, sundried tomato, blueberry, and leather, leading to a savoury dried sage finish. This wine has lots of character now and will soften over the next 2-3 years. Enjoy it with a seared piece of beef, ratatouille, and hearty polenta.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Saperavi and 5% Rara Neagra, this garnet colored wine has aromas of baking spices, raspberry, vanilla and black cherry. On the palate there are flavors of cherry, black raspberry and blueberry. The finish is exceptionally smooth.

Austin Hope grew up working alongside his father, inheriting his love and respect for the region. He led the family’s move into winemaking in 1995, and further exploration of Paso Robles began. In 2000, Austin created his own label, with very small productions of Rhône varietals because of the similarity in terroir. Today, Austin is showcasing an even greater sweep of Paso Robles and expressing a similar richness with a recently released Cabernet Sauvignon. This “entry level” wine of Ornellaia is a bright, lively wine that will introduce any wine drinker to the beauties of Ornellaia wines as it is instantly drinkable, enjoyable, and versatile. Made with (mostly) Merlot with the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, there is an abundance of cherry, strawberry, tobacco and spice aromas and flavours. Priced for instant consumption but can also be aged and held until 2030.

From the oldest winemaking family in Argentina, Nicolas Catena was a pioneer for high-altitude wine growing. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec is an excellent example of ageable Argentinian wine. Deep, concentrated, bramble and blackcurrant fruit dominate.

The history of Château Durfort-Vivens is linked to the Durfort-Duras family. The consecration of Château Durfort-Vivens took place in 1855 with the obtaining of the prestigious title of Second Cru Classé. The owners who have succeeded one another until today have never ceased to improve the quality of the wine and extend the reputation of the château. The vinification is in cement and wood vats. Aging in 40% new barrels for 18 months.The result is a Margaux full of finesse and freshness.

The bouquet of Durfort-Vivens 2014 opens with clear aromas of black fruits such as cherry and blackberry to evolve towards more subtle aromas of truffle. In the mouth, the wine is revealed, silky and elegant. It is definitely a wine that carries the colors of the prestigious Margaux appellation.
